As a women in NYC, you want to look and feel your very best. Unfortunately, the after-effects of pregnancy – particularly on your breasts and belly – can have a negative impact on your confidence and self-esteem. A “mommy makeover” is a customized combination of procedures designed to restore your pre-pregnancy body. While mommy makeovers generally focus on your breasts and abdomen, Dr. Nina Naidu’s goal is to help you regain your femininity and love the body you see in the mirror!
For many of Dr. Naidu’s patients, the decision to have a mommy makeover is about more than how they look. The mommy makeover signifies that they are finished having children and ready to focus on themselves. They are making a decision to feel more feminine and confident. Dr. Naidu’s goal is to help every patient look and feel her very best.
Most of Dr. Naidu’s mommy makeover patients are professional, independent women whose bodies have changed due to aging, pregnancy and weight loss. Their goal is to have natural-looking, feminine breasts and a flat tummy – goals that are difficult to fully achieve with exercise and healthy eating.
Dr. Naidu also has mommy makeover patients who are happy with their breasts or tummy, but have concerns about their face, arms, back or thighs that can be addressed as part of their mommy makeover.
A mommy makeover is a group of procedures that return your body to its pre-pregnancy condition – or to the body you wished you’d had! Although mommy makeovers traditionally target the breasts and abdomen, your mommy makeover is custom-designed to address your specific goals. Typical patients’ concerns include deflated and sagging breasts; loose skin on their abdomen; sagging, dimpled skin around their buttocks and thighs; and unsightly stretch marks and scars.
The advantage of a mommy makeover is that all of the procedures are done at the same time. This is great news for busy moms, who don’t have time for multiple recovery periods! It is also safer and more cost-effective to complete multiple procedures with a single surgery.
Although a mommy makeover generally focuses on a woman’s breasts and abdomen – the areas most directly impacted by pregnancy and childbirth – this is a unique opportunity to make changes that will improve your self-esteem. Procedures that can be included in a mommy makeover include:
You are a good candidate for a mommy makeover if, despite diet and exercise following your pregnancy, you are unhappy with the appearance of your breasts and abdomen. If you are planning to become pregnant in the future, Dr. Naidu recommends postponing your mommy makeover until after you’re finished having children.
You must have realistic expectations for the surgery. For the best results, you should also be close to your ideal weight and your weight should be stable. You should be physically healthy and not smoke. Your mommy makeover is major surgery and is not a treatment for obesity.
The first part of the mommy makeover process is a comprehensive consultation in our NYC office. Dr. Naidu will get to know you and your goals for your mommy makeover. She will also want to learn about your medical history (including previous surgeries) as well as your use of medications, nicotine and/or alcohol. Dr. Naidu’s goal is to help you feel more youthful and feminine.
Dr. Naidu will conduct a physical examination. If you are seeking breast surgery, she will measure the base width of your breasts and the amount of existing breast tissue. If you are seeking augmentation, these measurements will determine the optimal size and location of your implants. If you are having a breast reduction or a breast lift, the measurements will be used to plan your surgery
Dr. Naidu will also evaluate the areas of excess skin and fat on your abdomen and flanks. In addition, she will examine the muscles on your abdominal wall.
Dr. Naidu will talk to you about each area of concern and recommend the best procedure. Depending on your anatomy, you may also be a candidate for non-invasive treatments, such as CoolSculpting® or PelleFirm™.
At the end of the consultation, Dr. Naidu let you know if you are a good candidate for a mommy makeover. She will educate you about your options and answer your questions. Dr. Naidu wants you to make an informed decision about your mommy makeover and she will not pressure you to schedule the procedure.
The success of the breast augmentation portion of your mommy makeover depends on choosing the optimal implant type, style, size and location. Dr. Naidu will help make these crucial decisions based on the measurements of your breasts, the amount of existing breast tissue, your aesthetic goals, and your body frame.
Saline breast implants are structured like a balloon that is filled with sterile salt water. Saline implants are less expensive than other types of implants and require a smaller incision. One of the major benefits of saline breast implants is that, if the implant leaks or is damaged, your body easily absorbs the saline solution. Some people feel that saline breast implants do not look or feel as natural as other types of implants. They are also prone to rippling and wrinkling. Saline breast implants are approved for patients who at least 18 years-old.
Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel and feel much more like natural breast tissue. Although silicone implants have a long history of safety, the silicone gel cannot be absorbed by your body in the event of a leak. This means that patients must be monitored regularly by their physician. Silicone breast implants require a slightly larger incision and are approved for patients who are at least 22years-old.
Ideal Implants® combine the best of both silicone and saline implants. The Ideal Implant® has a series of silicone implant shells nested together and two separate chambers that hold saline. This unique design combines the natural look of silicone with the safety of saline. Breasts feel and look natural. Dr. Naidu is very pleased to be one of only nine plastic surgeons in New York City offering the Ideal Implant®. It is FDA-approved for cosmetic use in women aged 18years or older.
The ideal position for breast implants depends on the size of the implants and your anatomy. Dr. Naidu’s preference is to use a dual plane placement, which creates a pocket for the implant beneath the muscle and the breast tissue. Although the submuscular or dual-plane placement of breast implants involves a slightly longer recovery, the advantages of this placement are significant. The edges of the implant will be well-concealed and not as easily felt. Mammograms are simpler to perform because the breast tissue is easier to compress when the implant is placed behind the muscle. Finally, there is a significantly lower risk of capsular contracture when the implant is located behind the pectoralis muscle. For these reasons, Dr. Naidu will likely select this placement for your implants.
Dr. Naidu will help you determine the best shape for your implants. Both saline and silicone breast implants are made in round shapes. Silicone implants also come in a teardrop (anatomic) shape. Dr. Naidu prefers to use round implants for cosmetic breast augmentation. Dr. Naidu will recommend which shape is best for you.
The surface of the implant can be smooth or textured. Smooth implants move easily and feel soft, while textured implants have a slightly bumpy surface. Dr. Naidu most frequently uses smooth, round implants for her breast augmentation patients.
The benefit of texture is that the implant will not move as much within the breast pocket, which is especially important for tear-drop implants. The downside of textured implants is a higher risk of visible wrinkling. Also, in the rare instance that teardrop implants shift in position, a secondary surgery may be required.
If you decide to proceed with your mommy makeover, you will have a second consultation with Dr. Naidu in our NYC office. Dr. Naidu will explain her plan for your surgery. She will describe the procedures and let you know the length of your surgery, the location of your incisions, and what to expect during your recovery.
If you are having breast augmentation, Dr. Naidu will help you choose the optimal size, shape, volume and type of implant. This decision is based on the measurements of your breasts, the amount of existing breast tissue, your aesthetic goals, and your body frame. Dr. Naidu has a large variety of sizers available so that you can see how you will look following the augmentation.
At this appointment, you will also complete the necessary paperwork for the surgery. We will take pre-operative photographs. These photographs are an important part of your surgical planning and are considered part of your medical record. They will never be shown to other patients without your written permission.
Depending on your medical history, Dr. Naidu may advise you to discontinue certain medications prior to surgery. If you are a smoker, you must not smoke for eight weeks before or after the surgery. If you are over the age of 35 or have a family history of breast cancer, you will need to have a screening mammogram prior to your breast augmentation surgery. For your safety, Dr. Naidu may also order additional screening tests.
Candidates must also have support during the weeks following their mommy makeover. Mommy makeovers are major surgery and you will need time to recover. You must have someone to take over the driving, meal preparation and caretaking activities for your family for a period of 1-2 weeks.
Many of Dr. Naidu’s patients are strong, independent women who are reluctant to ask for help. These patients need to understand that a mommy makeover is major surgery and post-surgical assistance will be required. We strongly recommend that you create a plan to take care of yourself and your family, so that you can focus on your recovery.
Your mommy makeover will be completed on an outpatient basis at an ambulatory surgery center. The surgery lasts approximately three hours. Your surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, which is very safe and makes certain that you will be completely comfortable during your mommy makeover.
Dr. Naidu will meet with you immediately before your surgery. She will describe your surgical plan and how long the surgery will take. She will also make several marks on your breasts, abdomen and flanks. Finally, she will answer any last-minute questions.
For implants, Dr. Naidu commonly uses one of three incision placements. These incisions are the infra-mammary incision (located at the crease beneath the breast), the peri-areolar incision (located at the border between the breast skin and the pigmented skin of the nipple-areolar complex) and the axillary incision (located within the armpit).
As much as possible, incisions are hidden in the natural folds of the breasts or armpit, or around the areola.
Dr. Naidu will make a long horizontal incision between your hipbones. This incision is hidden within your bikini line. In patients who have undergone a prior C-section, the incision can be made in the same location and extended to the sides. The skin and fat are loosened from the abdominal wall. Sutures are placed in the fascia of the abdominal wall muscles to pull them together, creating a tight, firm abdomen. Your abdominal skin and fat are carefully pulled down over the incision line and the excess is removed.
While the umbilicus has stayed in the same place on the abdominal wall, the skin around it has moved. This requires Dr. Naidu to create a new opening. The placement of the umbilicus is marked on the skin, and a hole is cut. The umbilicus is pulled through the skin and sutured into place. The incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures.
Drains are generally placed to prevent the buildup of fluid, which can create pressure on the incisions and re-draped skin. A drain is a clear plastic tube placed through a small incision, which leads out of the body to a small oval-shaped bulb. The drains will be removed in the office four to five days following surgery, depending upon the volume of drainage recorded. In some cases, Dr. Naidu will place special sutures which will eliminate the need for drains.
Dr. Naidu begins the liposuction procedure by making a small incision in the chosen location. Fluid containing a local anesthetic, salt water and epinephrine is injected to provide anesthesia while limiting blood loss. Dr. Naidu will then insert a canula (a small, hollow tube) to suction out the fat and liquid required to contour the area. Liposuction will permanently remove excess fat.
When you wake up after your mommy makeover, you will be wearing surgical binders and/or garments. You will have drains around your abdomen and Steri-Strip dressings over your incisions. Once you are no longer groggy, you will be transported to a recovery area and given something to eat. The nurses in the recovery area will demonstrate how to empty and record the output from your drains.
To be discharged, you must have a responsible adult to escort you home and stay with you for the first night after your surgery. Alternatively, our office can help arrange a private nurse to stay with you. When you return home, you should take a nap for two or three hours. During your nap, most of the narcotic medication which you received during surgery will wear off and you should not have a problem with nausea.
Many of our patients report very little pain. However the experience of pain varies widely depending on personal tolerance and the procedures performed.
Immediately following breast surgery, it will be difficult to lift your arms over your head and you will need assistance with personal activities. You may also experience bruising, swelling, and tenderness in your breasts. Swelling can be reduced by applying ice packs to your breasts.
Most patients report only mild discomfort following their tummy tuck. Rather than describing pain, they note that their abdomen feels tight — as if they have performed many sit-ups. Pain will typically diminish after 48 hours.
Experiences following liposuction vary greatly, but most patients report that they had much less pain than anticipated. Dr. Naidu will provide pain medication to keep you comfortable. Wearing the compression garment will reduce both swelling and pain
Dr. Naidu will give you specific instructions to follow after your surgery. She will give you prescriptions for antibiotics and for pain management, as well as instructions about how to take care of your incisions.
Three or four days following your surgery, you will return to our NYC office. At this appointment we will check on your progress and remove your drains. If you’ve been wearing a binder, you will transition to wearing compression garment(s) that will help reduce your swelling during the early postoperative period. Dr. Naidu will advise you about how long you must wear the compression garment.
Dr. Naidu provides patients with silicone gel strips to be worn over the incisions for four to six weeks following surgery. In addition, using vitamin E oil can help scars to remain soft and flat. Incisions will fade over time but may not completely disappear
Dr. Naidu will advise you about when you can resume physical activity. Generally walking is permitted the day after surgery, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting are limited until six weeks following surgery. Swelling will be present for the initial two to three months after surgery. The final results of a mommy makeover are typically seen three to six months after surgery. Your scars will continue to fade and soften for up to one year following surgery.
During your consultation, Dr. Naidu will explain the risks of a mommy makeover so that you can make an informed decision about this surgery. As with all surgeries, the risks include bleeding, infection and scarring. Specific risks of breast augmentation include capsular contracture (scar tissue around the implant), rippling of the implants, implant rupture, and persistent numbness or pain. The risks of a tummy tuck and liposuction include bleeding, infection and numbness.
You will have permanent scars on your breasts and lower abdomen following your mommy makeover. As much as possible, scars are hidden within the bikini line and in the natural folds of the body. Although scars will improves with time, they will not completely fade. In rare cases the scar may become thick or wide, but this cannot be predicted.
Dr. Naidu will provide you with a set of silicone strips to use following surgery to assist in scar reduction.
Complications from a mommy makeover can be reduced by choosing a skilled surgeon, providing a thorough medical history, and carefully following your pre-operative and post-operative instructions.
